A World of Fiber (to the Home)
These last couple of days (ever since I got back from Boston, really) I've been working on a Google Maps "manual-mashup" aiming at pinpointing fiber to the home projects around the world. It's a work in progress, obviously. Currently I'm missing lots of things:
- projects themselves, I'm sure there's dozens in the US alone, and I'd like to point Verizon's presence for FiOS by City at least, just one for Japan doesn't seem to do the country of ftth justice, but I don't know who the competitive operators to NTT are, etc.
- details on projects already mentioned: number of planned subscribers, state or rollouts, links, etc.
So, if you can help with either of these, please do so, either by sending me emails with details or by using the collaborate button on the map. I don't know how that works exactly but I'm sure we can find it as we go.
Sources for this early version were mostly:
- Dirk van der Woude's fiber bible (November Update)
- Wikipedia's Fiber to the Premises and Fiber to the Premises in the United States pages
- my own archives
Please let me know what you think and feel free tu suggest improvements. So far the legend is simple: green is live, yellow is pilot/advanced rollout, and red is planned. I'm thinking of maybe distinguished muni and private projects, but I'm not sure it's that feasible in practice.
