KPN announces FTTx roll-out

Netherlands It wasn't a huge surprise, I'd even go as far as saying that it was expected, but KPN's announcement that they are rolling-out FTTH is interesting news. You can read Lightreading's article KPN Plans FTTx, Cuts More Staff for details.

Basically, KPN's startegy is to rollout Fiber to the Curb with VDSL2 "last mile" everywhere and FTTH in select areas. It's slightly unclear at this stage if these areas are actually places like Almere where Reggefiber is deploying its open access network or actuall KPN investments.

KPN is the second European multinational operator to go down the FTTx route after Orange. While these beginnings are timid, I believe that the advance these two will generate in terms of know how and (hopefully) marketing will be invaluable in the years to come.

I'm betting on Telefonica next.
