French tech journalist Karyn Poupée is a Tokyo resident and had already graced us a few months back with a thorough article on FTTH offers. I've just stumbled upon a long analysis of IPTV offers in Japan she wrote on an Algerian Blog, entitled La TV Haut Débit au Pays du Soleil Levant.
A very interesting analysis. The key points to me are:
- IPTV didn't pick up in Japan before FTTH had rolled out sufficiently to guarantee quality (and guaranteed QoS is a paying option)
- NTT is currently promoting IPTV aggressively by ensuring there is specific content to its FTTH customers (through media content deals)
- TV manufacturers are including technologies in their latest TV sets that allow access to internet and VoD content, thus disintermediating the operator completely
On the off-chance that you don't read French, a titanium grade reader of mine has offered a link to a Google Translated version. Not the best English, but you can't make out most of the meaning!
