French broadband market disruptor Free (Groupe Iliad) released its 2008 results last week. It made a lot of noise in the French press for reasons which will be apparent in my later posts. The powerpoints that were presented on March 19th, 2009 are available here in English. What's new compared to previous years is that the Q&A that followed the presentation was filmed by Free customer web portal Univers Freebox and uploaded for the world to see.
Since it all in French, and since I dearly love my non-French readers (which is not to say that I don't love my French readers) and since I get questions about Free a lot, I thought it would be of interest to produce an english subtitled version. I've had to split the video into 5 separate parts; which you can find here:
- Free Press Conference Part I
- Free Press Conference Part II
- Free Press Conference Part III
- Free Press Conference Part IV
- Free Press Conference Part V
Please note that Free does not only talk about Fiber here, or even broadband, but also about mobile, wimax and other topics. Still, there's a lot in there to interest fiber buffs, I suspect. Also note that it will all make more sense if you've read the above presentation first. I will comment on the contents of the video and the slides once I've uploaded everything.
A note of caution: this is quick and dirty translation. It's mostly accurate but some of the subtleties may have been glossed over in the interest of saving time (I've been spending my evenings doing these subtitles). In other words, don't buy or sell you Iliad stock on the basis of my subtitles, get a proper, paid-for translator in before we make decisions based on what I translated!
Finally, I want to thank Univers Freebox for allowing me to re-use the video. Go check them out! Oh and please rate the video in order to increase its visibility!
Note: Toggling subtitles in Youtube is very easy:
- slide the mouse pointer on the white triangle pointing up in a a grey rectangle on the lower right corner. A menu pops up.
- slide you mouse up to the grey rectangle with white lines at the bottom.
- click; it should turn red, subtitles are now on.
- et voilà!
